What is HEIC and How to Convert It to JPG for Free

Your iPhone takes photos in HEIC format — but Windows, Android, and most websites cannot open them. Here is what HEIC is and three ways to convert it to JPG instantly.

HEIC to JPG Conversion

You just took photos on your iPhone and sent them to your PC — but they will not open. The files end in .heic and Windows Photo Viewer says it cannot display them. Sound familiar? You are not alone. This is one of the most common iPhone-to-PC frustrations.

What Is a HEIC File?

HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. Apple introduced it in iOS 11 (2017) as the default photo format for iPhone 7 and newer. HEIC uses HEVC compression — the same technology used for 4K video — to create photos that are roughly 50% smaller than JPG while maintaining the same visual quality.

That is why Apple switched to it: HEIC photos take half the storage space on your iPhone compared to JPG. A photo that would be 5MB as a JPG is only 2–3MB as HEIC.

Why Can't Windows or Android Open HEIC?

HEIC is an Apple proprietary format. Microsoft and Google have not built native HEIC support into their operating systems by default. While Windows 11 has limited HEIC support through a paid codec extension, most users still encounter the "cannot open" error. Android also lacks native HEIC support.

3 Ways to Convert HEIC to JPG

Method 1: Online Converter (Easiest — No Software Needed)

  1. Visit ImageToolsLab HEIC to JPG Converter
  2. Upload your .heic file
  3. Click Convert to JPG
  4. Download your JPG — done in seconds

This works on any device and requires no app installation. Your photos are processed in the browser and never uploaded to a server.

Method 2: Stop iPhone Saving as HEIC

The easiest long-term fix is to change your iPhone settings so it saves photos as JPG from the start:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone
  2. Tap Camera
  3. Tap Formats
  4. Select Most Compatible

From now on your iPhone will save photos as JPG. Note: existing HEIC photos still need to be converted.

Method 3: Share as JPG Directly from iPhone

When sharing a photo from your iPhone to a non-Apple device, iOS automatically converts it to JPG. Just use AirDrop to a Mac, or share via Messages/WhatsApp — the recipient gets a JPG file, not HEIC.

💡 Privacy Note: Our HEIC to JPG converter runs entirely in your browser. Your personal iPhone photos are never uploaded to any server — conversion happens on your device.

HEIC vs JPG — Should You Keep Using HEIC?

If you only use Apple devices, HEIC is great — smaller files, same quality. But if you regularly share photos with Windows users, Android phones, or upload to websites, JPG is more practical. The "Most Compatible" setting on iPhone is the simplest solution for most people.
